Brief Bio

T. Brettel Dawson

Since 1986 Professor Dawson has been a faculty member in the Department of Law at Carleton University, tenured since 1990 and currently holding the rank of Associate Professor.

The Department of Law at Carleton University is a leading centre of academic legal studies in Canada. Between 1994-1999, she was Chair of the Department of Law at Carleton University, during which time she was extensively involved with program and curriculum development and implementation in the areas of human rights, criminal justice, conflict resolution, and BA renewal.

A significant portion of her research has focused on the area of equality law. Her edited collection, Women, Law and Social Change, (4th ed, 2002), integrates diversity (including race and disability) issues and a range of approaches to law reform and legal/social change.

Since 1999, she has devoted a portion of her time to the National Judicial Institute in Ottawa. She was Coordinator (then Senior Advisor) of Social Context Education and is currently the Academic Director at the Institute. She works with both the domestic and international program of judicial education. She is currently involved with projects in the Philippines and Ghana.

Her other professional activities in conjunction with her academic position have focused on equality issues.

  • 1987-1998, she was a member of the Boards of Inquiry (Ontario Human Rights Code), involving mediations and inquiry and decision on human rights complaints.
  • 1995-2000 She chaired a Carleton University committee appointed by the President responsible for comprehensive revision and redrafting of the University's human rights policies and procedures. These policies were approved by the Board of Governors (January 25, 2001 and Senate (January 26, 2001)
  • 1991-1992 and 1994-1996, she was the English language Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law.
  • 1997-99, she was a member of the national External Committee of the Independent Policy Research Fund of Status of Women Canada (a $1.25 million fund for policy research of national relevance promoting gender equality).
    She is a member of the Board of Directors of CANADEM, Canadian Resource Bank for Democracy and Human Rights.
